An “intense” nor’easter slammed the East Coast Friday with a mix of icy rain, snow and frigid winds — resulting in thousands of flight cancellations, flooded roads and a dangerous morning commute.
Like the January nor’easter, this storm has the potential to turn into a “bomb cyclone” — or undergo bombogenesis — according to the Weather Center. But even if it doesn’t, New York will still feel its effects over the course of the next several days.
“As the saying goes, March is coming in like a lion and we are preparing for heavy snow, rain and flooding across New York this weekend,” Gov. Cuomo said.
Nearly 2,000 flights have been cancelled nationwide, most of them in airports across the northeast, according to flight-tracking service FlightAware.
More than 400 flights have so far been cancelled in LaGuardia Airport because of the winter storm. Newark has so far seen almost 260 cancellations while JFK airport reported nearly 250 as of this morning.
Several airlines are giving out vouchers to their passengers in light of the weather cancellations.

The storm, with an estimated 80 million people in its path, could also result in power outages as well as “minor and some moderate flooding” for areas along the coast, according to the National Weather Service.
The subways continued to run normally Friday morning despite the severe weather above ground.
“There is no weather-related or other emergency disruptions of MTA service at this time,” MTA said on its website.
The wintry mix, however, has caused hazardous driving conditions and slowed traffic in several areas.
