Alice Johnson had been in prison for so long that she had no clue who Kim Kardashian was when the reality TV star began pushing President Trump to pardon the convicted grandmother.
“I did not know her name,” said Johnson, who found herself scrounging for every magazine with a story on Kardashian while behind bars, in an interview with NBC News that aired Thursday. “I started reading everything I could about her.”
Johnson, 63, was granted clemency last week for her 1996 conviction on drug conspiracy and money laundering charges, after the “Keeping up with the Kardashians” star spent the last seven months fighting for her release.
But they hadn’t met in-person until this week, when the pair sat down with NBC News to describe how Kardashian lobbied First Daughter Ivanka Trump and then the President to get Johnson out of her life sentence.
“I called Ivanka, and we had a really great conversation about women and wanting to help each other,” Kardashian said. “I knew that she would have understood Alice. She immediately was so receptive and so great.”
Johnson has owned up to the mistakes of getting into the drug trade after getting divorced, losing her job and dealing with her youngest son dying in a motorcycle accident.
Kardashian, speaking to NBC News, said Trump was nothing but sympathetic to Johnson’s plight when they met at the Oval Office two weeks ago — on Johnson’s birthday — despite him once suggesting drug dealers receive the death penalty.
“The President had compassion for her right away,” she said. “He felt like it was the right thing to do.”

But the reality TV power player said some light ice-breaking may have helped.
“I first said that I am here because I really want to know why you kicked Khloe off ‘The Apprentice,’ ” she said of her younger sister’s departure from the President’s show in 2009.
Kardashian and husband Kanye West have come under fire for their comments about the President, with the rapper praising the Republican this spring in a bizarre Twitter rant.
“To me this has nothing to do with politics,” Kardashian said. “This has to do with people.”
Trump wished Johnson luck last week and told her: “Have a wonderful life!”
“I love it,” Johnson told NBC News of Trump’s congratulatory tweet. “Thank you, President Trump, for making that wonderful life possible.”
Johnson said there’s no proper way for her to thank Kardashian for picking up her cause.
“I have to walk my ‘thank you’ out,” she said. “I have to live it out for her, for my family, for the supporters.”
