Driver who killed two kids after losing control of car in Park Slope hit with manslaughter, negligent homicide indictment

A Brooklyn grand jury has voted to indict a Staten Island woman who lost control of her car and killed two children, one of them the daughter of a Tony award-winning actress, sources said.

The grand jury hit Dorothy Bruns, 44, with manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide and assault charges for the deadly March 5 crash on 9th St. near 5th Ave. in Park Slope, the sources said.

Bruns, who has multiple sclerosis, claimed she had a seizure before she ran a red light and hit Joshua Lew, age 1, and Abigail Blumenstein 4. Cops stripped her of her license the following day.

Just three days before the crash, medics rushed to her apartment after someone called 911 and said she was having heart problems.

That was one of a number of times medics had to go to her home. In addition, she had racked up 12 traffic violations since 2016, including speeding in a school zone and running red lights — raising questions about whether she should have been driving at all.

In January, she went on medical leave from her job for about a month. Neighbors said she looked so sickly they worried about her driving.

"I don't think she should have been driving, the way she looked," said Mark Torres, 34, in March. "She was hunched over, walked slow, slurring her words."

In September, she struck a pedestrian in Long Island City but the crash wasn't properly documented, the Daily News reported in February.

Investigators were previously trying to determine whether her doctors had told her not to drive. If she had been told not to drive, and still got behind the wheel, that could have been enough for the grand jury to charge her.

Mayor de Blasio said as much at the time of the deadly crash.

"She should never have been allowed to have been driving a car after what we know of these other violations," he said last month.

Bruns was arrested and will be arraigned at some point Thursday afternoon.
