Woman arrested for trying to smuggle drugs in Bible for inmat

A Missouri woman was arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle drugs using a Bible to an inmate at a jail.

Ashley Despain used a Bible to hide a small bag of marijuana when she was visiting an inmate at Vernon County jail in Nevada on Monday, the Kansas City Star reported.

A jail guard noticed a lump in the Bible, took the holy book from her and found the bag between the binding and pages.

Sheriff Jason Mosher told the Star that’s the “wrong way of trying to help someone.”

The inmate was expecting the drugs, he said, adding that he didn’t know the relationship between the inmate and Despain.

Despain was arrested in the jail’s parking lot along with another person she was with.

She was being held on $5,000 bond.
