Special counsel Robert Mueller is more interested in what Rick Gates knows about the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia than strengthening his case against Paul Manafort.
Gates, a former Trump campaign aide who also worked on the President’s transition team, accepted a plea deal in February and agreed to work with Mueller’s team in exchange for a reduced sentence.
Court documents and a CNN report reveal Gates is likely aiding Mueller’s probe into possible coordination between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin.

Russia is believed to have interfered in the 2016 election in order to help Trump win the White House.
Prosecutors told Gates months ago during plea negotiations that they didn’t need his cooperation against Manafort, according to CNN. Instead, they wanted to hear what he knew about contact between the Trump campaign and Russians, the network reported.
