Actor thought co-star was plotting to kill him

Eccentric filmmaker Tommy Wiseau apparently thought his “The Room" co-star Greg Sestero was plotting to kill him on a recent road trip, which partially inspired their new movie “Best Friends.”

According to Sestero, he and Wiseau were driving up the California Coast when they saw a roadside hotel and decided to get some rest. That, for reasons he doesn’t understand, made Wiseau suspicious.

“We got up to Bodega Bay it was a long drive and I said ‘Hey, let's stay here, it's a long drive back,” said Sestero.

Considering that Wiseau is a highly eccentric personality — portrayed brilliantly by James Franco in “The Disaster Artist” — Sestero decided that he’d personally handle the check-in and suggested his long-haired pal with the mysterious accent meet him in their room.

“He thought I was doing that so nobody knew he was there, that I was doing that for ‘the plan,’” Sestero told us. It wasn’t until a couple months later he found out that those thoughts had been going through Wiseau’s head.

“He said it later, he said ‘I have these vibrations from you,’” Sestero recalled, adding that there had been no friction between them throughout the day. “It was a strong feeling he got in than moment and that was it.”

Ironically, Wiseau and Sestero — whose road trip movie opens Friday — became accidental indie heroes in 2003 because of the failure of “The Room,” which Wiseau produced and directed. That film flopped so spectacularly as a drama that it evolved into a cult classic comedy that still shows in movie houses nationwide. Sestero wrote about the making of “The Room” in his book “The Disaster Artist,” which Franco adapted for a 2017 film of the same name. Franco won a Golden Globe for his performance in that movie. Sestero thinks he could have won an Oscar too.

“I definitely think James’ performance was Oscar worthy,” according to Sestero. “That was special to me because 18 years ago, Tommy talked about the Golden Globe when we were making ‘The Room’ and we watched James Franco win the Golden Globe for playing James Dean.”

On Jan. 11, four days after Franco won his Golden Globe, The L.A. times published a story in which five women accused Franco of sexual misconduct. He denied any wrongdoing. Franco was not nominated for an Oscar when Academy Award voting closed on Jan. 12.
