Justin Timberlake’s Super Bowl halftime show was dizzying if not dazzling Sunday — and there were no malfunctions, wardrobe or otherwise.
The former boy band star’s loud, cluttered halftime show was choreographed within an inch of its life, with Timberlake, 37, backed by dancers and his band The Tennessee Kids.

A rushed medley of his biggest hits, including “Rock Your Body,” “SexyBack,” “My Love,” “Cry Me a River” and “Suit and Tie,” was highlighted by a light show and cheering fans, but nothing that rose to the honor of the Super Bowl.
The show only slowed down for Prince’s “I Would Die 4 U,” with footage from the Purple One’s own Super Bowl performance, but even that Minneapolis honor was lost amid a weekend of controversy.
Rumors circulated in the days before the big game that Timberlake was planning for a hologram of Minnesota native Prince to join him at the halftime show, but the idea was met with immediate backlash from the late rocker’s friends and family.
Prince himself said in a 1998 interview that the “whole virtual reality thing ... really is demonic,” but the hologram was rumored to be in place as recently as Saturday.
“UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES did we approve of this!” Prince’s sister, Sharon L. Nelson, tweeted amid speculation.

Absent from Timberlake’s performance was Janet Jackson, who some speculated would be invited as a 2004 do-over. It would mark the first time she and Timberlake returned to the halftime stage since their disastrous wardrobe malfunction bared her breast and offended viewers 14 years ago.
But the “Rhythm Nation” singer officially struck down reports in a statement on Saturday.
“To put to rest any speculation or rumors as to whether I will be performing at the Super Bowl tomorrow: I will not,” she wrote on Twitter. “Thank you for your support and I do look forward to seeing you all very soon.”

*NSYNC, who had taken the stage with Timberlake in 2001 for their first Super Bowl, stayed clear of Minnesota, despite rumors of a reunion with JC Chasez, Chris Kirkpatrick, Joey Fatone and Lance Bass.
Overall, the Super Bowl music functioned in safety, including Pink’s pre-kickoff performance of the national anthem and “Hamilton” alum Leslie Odom Jr.’s rendition of “America the Beautiful.”
