Four slain in 'horrific' Kentucky killing spree

Police investigate the deaths of four people and their suspected assailant, Joseph Nickell, in and near Paintsville, Ky., on Saturday. (WSAZ NEWS CHANNEL 3)
A man went on a “horrific murder spree” Saturday afternoon when he killed four people and then himself, police said.
Deputies first discovered a pair of victims after 3:30 p.m. inside the kitchen of a home in Paintsville, a rural town about 95 miles east of Lexington, Johnson County Sheriff Dwayne Price said late Saturday.
A witness saw suspect Joseph Nickell flee the home in a black Toyota Camry, leading to a multi-agency manhunt Saturday afternoon.
Cops later got a tip that the Camry was spotted near an apartment complex in Paintsville.
Nickell was found dead inside one of the complex’s apartments alongside two more victims, police said.
Authorities haven’t identified the four victims in the gruesome killing, nor whether they were previously linked to Nickell, who’s believed to have died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The killings left law enforcement in the eastern Kentucky community rattled.
“There are no words to describe the heartbreak in seeing four lives taken due to the actions of one man,” Price, a 34-year lawman, said in statement late Saturday. “This is one of the most disturbing acts of violence I have ever seen.”
