The military is reviewing online images that purportedly show the body of a U.S. soldier killed in an ambush in Niger last year.
A Twitter user posted what appears to be a screengrab and wrote that an ISIS affiliate group broadcast a video showing the October attack that killed Sgt. La David Johnson and three other U.S. Green Berets.
Twitter user @maboulmaaly wrote that the video, which lasts more than 10 minutes, shows “scenes of a screaming wounded soldier, in addition to the bodies of three other dead American soldiers.”

U.S. Africa Command issued a statement saying it was “aware of a post on Twitter purporting to show a U.S. soldier from the Oct. 4 ambush in Tongo Tongo, Niger,” the Army Times reported.
“We are reviewing the post and determining the veracity of the tweet and the assertions that there is an associated video,” AFRICOM continued.

“We cannot comment further on this issue, or the ongoing investigation related to the Oct. 4 ambush until the investigation is complete.”
Johnson, 25, was part of a 12-member Army special forces unit accompanying 30 Nigerien forces when they were attacked in a densely wooded area by as many as 50 militants.

The bodies of three Green Berets were located on the day of the attack, while Johnson’s remains were found under a thick brush two days later.
The gap in time led to questions about whether Johnson was killed in the assault and not found, or if he was taken away by the enemy.
According to the officials, a medical examination concluded that Johnson was shot as many as 18 times.
It is believed he died in the attack and there were no indications he was shot at close range, or had been bound or taken prisoner, as several media reports have suggested.
