The victim, Mohammed Ismail, met untimely death at a rally of one of the chairmanship aspirants in the Ajaokuta LGA, Abdulrahaman Dansabe, at the Local Government Secondary School.
It was reliably gathered that the incident occurred around 2pm while the aspirant, who is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was unfolding his plans for the area.
An eyewitness told Punch that the yet-to-be identified policeman, suddenly opened fire and a bullet hit Ismail. The incident caused confusion in the area as those at the venue of the rally ran for safety.
The eyewitness said, “Some people said the policeman acted under the influence of alcohol.
“Our efforts to save the man proved abortive as he died shortly after he was rushed to a nearby hospital.”
The victim, who was said to be an HND graduate of the Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, was later buried around 7.30pm on Sunday.
The state Police PRO, ASP William Aya, said investigation into the incident was on.
